A New Found Talent

jryouthart:

During the weekday one or a few of the junior youth stop by to visit me at home after school. They typically come for a little while have a snack and talk about their school day and their interests and goals. Overtime the spontaneous visits inspired more formal planed outings with one or two of the youth outside of our programmed time.  The purpose of these formal visits is to focus on mentoring them. Visits typically consist in homework tutoring to simply having ice-cream to talk more in depth about their life challenges. One youth loves to bake, so when we meet we try out a new recipe together. Another youth, Miguel, has shown lots of interest in photography, so we typically walk around the neighborhood taking photographs together with my camera.

Over the weekend, Miguel came with us to the Naw-Ruz picnic that the community puts on every year.  After some tutoring in photography my sister and I let him take the camera for an hour so he could practice taking photographs.  After he came back we reviewed the pictures he had taken, and we were stunned at the well thought out shots. This kid is 10 years old. Look at the photographs he took!  They are wonderful shots!

We talked about each photo, and I asked him specific questions about the decisions he made concerning composition, lighting, subject and angle.  At first he would answer “I don’t know” but after he grew more confident he started to talk more about his decisions and thought process.  The questions helped him analyze his own intuitive process of seeing and expressing and he was able to appreciate and learn from the decisions he was making.

Our next project is to create a portfolio of his photographs.
